It’s almost the 4th of July which means its time for a festive cookie! I love celebrating any holiday and this is no exception. I was sitting at my desk the other day while at work thinking about what food I’d be making this weekend. Of course, I would be making my Party Chex Snack Mix, but I needed something sweet for dessert! Its been hot here lately, so cookies are a good option if you are having a party outside and are worried about melting!
These are pretty easy to make, you don’t need to chill though dough before hand if you are on a time limit, of course, you can if you want it would make the cookies spread less while baking, but these turn out great regardless! I’ve even added a short helpful video of the process, take a look!
You can leave them plain, make them into frosting sandwiches or you can have fun decorating them and add some festive sprinkles!
4th Of July Cookies
- 3/4 Cup Unsalted Butter (Softened)
- 3/4 Cup Granulated Sugar
- 1 Egg
- 3 Teaspoons Vanilla Extract
- 2 1/4 Cup All-Purpose Flour
- 1/2 Teaspoon Baking Powder
- 1/4 Teaspoon Salt
- Red & Blue Food Coloring
- 1 Container Vanilla Frosting (optional)
1.Preheat oven to 350 degrees.Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
2. In a medium-sized bowl, stir together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
3. Cream the butter and sugar in a large mixing bowl. Add the egg, beat until fully incorporated. Next, add the vanilla and almond extracts.
4. Gradually add in the flour, baking powder, salt mixture. Once combined, the dough should be well-formed and not be sticky to the touch.
5. Divide dough into 3 equal parts. In a medium bowl, dye one section of the dough red. In a separate bowl, dye another section blue. Add food coloring until your desired shade is achieved. It may take 5-6 drops of food coloring.
6. Tear the dough into smaller pieces, they don’t need to be even. Repeat for each color. Toss the colors together so they are mixed. form the dough into a roll. Make sure the dough is stuck together but don’t take too much time folding it together or the colors will mix.
7. Slice the toll into about 3/4 inch thick slices.
8. Place slices on the parchment lined baking sheet cut side down about 1 1/2 inches apart. These will spread out a little.
9. Bake cookies for 12-15 minutes or until the edges turn golden brown.
10. Allow cookies to cool on a wire cooling rack. Once cooled you can frost them if desired. While I kept most of mine plain, you can also frost them and make little cookie sandwiches. Frost the bottom of one cookie and press it to the bottom of another!
11. Store in an air tight container. Happy 4th of July!
